One of the most significant developments in healthcare technology was the passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act in 2009. The Act granted the Federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) authority to establish regulations and oversee the promotion, quality, reliability, and safety of health information technology (Kadakia et al., 2021).</p> <p>The primary purpose of the HITECH Act was to encourage the adoption and effective use of health information technology, particularly electronic health records (EHRs), by healthcare providers. The legislation also addressed several limitations that remained following the implementation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Through financial incentives and the Meaningful Use initiative, the HITECH Act accelerated the implementation of EHR systems by providing substantial funding to healthcare organizations and clinicians willing to adopt digital record-keeping systems (Kadakia et al., 2021). As a result, healthcare organizations across the United States experienced increased adoption of electronic records, improved accessibility of patient information, and enhanced communication among healthcare providers.</p> <h2>Relationship Between Medical Technology and Healthcare Expenditures</h2> <p>Although technological innovation is essential for improving patient care, researchers and policymakers continue to debate whether advances in medical technology ultimately reduce or increase healthcare costs. In the United States, technological advancements have contributed significantly to rising healthcare expenditures. As healthcare organizations adopt new equipment, diagnostic tools, treatment methods, and pharmaceutical products, overall spending often increases because of the costs associated with acquiring and maintaining these innovations.</p> <p>One factor contributing to increased expenditures is the development of new treatments for diseases and chronic conditions that were previously difficult or impossible to manage effectively. Conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, and certain cardiovascular disorders now have advanced treatment options that improve patient outcomes but often require substantial financial investment. Additionally, technological improvements have enhanced the ability to diagnose and treat complex medical conditions, including procedures such as coronary artery bypass surgery and advanced imaging techniques (Keehan et al., 2020).</p> <p>The development of specialized therapies has also contributed to higher healthcare spending. For example, medications such as erythropoietin, which is used to treat anemia in dialysis patients, improve quality of life but increase treatment costs. Consequently, while technological innovation enhances healthcare quality and extends life expectancy, it frequently contributes to rising national healthcare expenditures.</p> <h2>Emerging Healthcare Technologies and Future Transformation</h2> <p>Telemedicine represents one of the most influential technological trends currently transforming the American healthcare system. Telemedicine enables healthcare providers to diagnose, monitor, and treat patients remotely, increasing access to care for individuals living in rural or underserved areas. By reducing geographical barriers, telemedicine has the potential to improve patient outcomes while increasing healthcare accessibility.</p> <p>One of the technologies supporting telemedicine is Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC). WebRTC is an open-source technology that allows web browsers and mobile applications to support real-time communication through video, voice, and messaging functions (Shacklett & Johnson, 2021). Through telemedicine platforms utilizing WebRTC, patients can communicate directly with healthcare providers, share medical documentation, receive consultations, and participate in follow-up appointments without traveling to healthcare facilities. These capabilities contribute to improved convenience and continuity of care.</p> <p>Another emerging technology with significant potential is the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). IoMT refers to a network of connected medical devices capable of collecting, transmitting, and analyzing health-related data. Devices such as wearable health monitors, smart sensors, and remote patient monitoring systems allow healthcare providers to track patient conditions continuously and intervene when necessary.</p> <p>The widespread adoption of IoMT technologies could substantially improve chronic disease management by providing real-time health information and facilitating early intervention. Patients with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease could benefit from continuous monitoring, while healthcare providers would gain access to more comprehensive clinical data. As a result, IoMT has the potential to improve patient outcomes, enhance preventive care, and contribute to a more efficient healthcare system.</p> <h2>Conclusion</h2> <p>Healthcare technology continues to play a critical role in transforming healthcare delivery and improving patient outcomes. The HITECH Act significantly accelerated the adoption of electronic health records and strengthened the healthcare industry's technological infrastructure. While technological advancements have contributed to rising healthcare expenditures, they have also expanded treatment options, improved diagnostic capabilities, and enhanced patient care.
