Healthcare Disparities
Abstract

Conceptual Overview of Healthcare Inequality and Its Systemic Implications

Healthcare Disparities

Definition and Professional Relevance of Healthcare Disparities

Overview The health care problem or issue that I have chosen to research is healthcare disparities. Healthcare disparities refer to the unequal distribution of health services and resources among different populations, leading to differences in health outcomes. This issue is of interest to me because it highlights the systemic inequalities that exist within the healthcare system and the impact these disparities have on marginalized communities. In my professional experience, I have seen firsthand how healthcare disparities can affect patients and their families, especially those from low-income or minority backgrounds.

Systematic Approach to Literature Identification and Selection

Criteria for searching for articles In order to conduct my research on healthcare disparities, I used specific criteria to search for scholarly or academic peer-reviewed literature related to the topic. To begin, I utilized three databases: PubMed, CINAHL, and JSTOR. These databases are known for their extensive collections of academic and peer-reviewed articles, making them a valuable resource for my research. Additionally, I used keywords such as "healthcare disparities," "health equity," "health inequality," and "social determinants of health" to search for relevant articles. By utilizing these specific keywords, I was able to narrow down my search to articles that were most relevant to my topic of interest. Furthermore, I limited my search to articles that were published within the past 3–5 years. This helped me ensure that the articles I was reading were current and up-to-date, providing me with the most recent information and research on healthcare disparities.

Critical Evaluation of Scholarly Evidence on Healthcare Disparities

Annotated Bibliography

"Addressing Social Determinants of Health to Reduce Health Disparities" by R. L. Williams and S. L. Collins (2018). This article, published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, discusses the importance of addressing social determinants of health in order to reduce health disparities among marginalized communities. The authors argue that healthcare organizations should adopt a more holistic approach that addresses the underlying social and economic factors that contribute to health disparities.

"Building Health Equity: A Framework for Addressing Health Disparities" by J. S. Krieger and S. L. Sidney (2018). This article, published in the American Journal of Public Health, presents a framework for addressing health disparities through the elimination of social and economic inequalities. The authors propose that healthcare organizations should adopt a population health approach that focuses on addressing the root causes of health disparities.

"Addressing Health Disparities through Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services" by A. L. Flores and M. J. Villegas (2018). This article, published in the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health, highlights the importance of culturally and linguistically appropriate services in addressing health disparities among immigrant and minority communities. The authors argue that healthcare organizations should adopt a culturally responsive approach that takes into account the unique needs and cultural backgrounds of marginalized communities.

"Addressing Health Disparities in Rural Communities" by J. A. Johnson and M. A. Chen (2018). This article, published in the Journal of Rural Health, discusses the challenges of addressing health disparities in rural communities and proposes strategies for improving access to healthcare in these areas. The authors argue that healthcare organizations should adopt a community-based approach that involves collaboration with local organizations and community members.

Integrated Insights on Determinants and Intervention Strategies

From my research, I have learned that healthcare disparities are a complex issue that is closely linked to social determinants of health. Addressing these disparities requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both the structural barriers to care and the social and economic conditions that underlie them. Key areas for intervention include increasing access to care, improving the quality of care, and increasing the cultural competence of the healthcare workforce. Additionally, community engagement and addressing the social determinants of health, such as poverty, education, and housing, are crucial in eliminating healthcare disparities.

Similarly, healthcare disparities are a significant problem in the United States and are caused by a complex web of social, economic, and environmental factors. Efforts to address these disparities, such as the Affordable Care Act and addressing social determinants of health, have made progress but more work needs to be done. Additionally, I learned that patient-centered care can be an important strategy for reducing health disparities by addressing the unique needs and preferences of different populations. Overall, my research has reinforced the importance of addressing healthcare disparities in order to achieve health equity for all.
