The movie <em>Fists of Freedom</em> incorporates events that led to the 1968 Summer Games, especially the heated political context that affected the successes and failures of African American athletes. <em>Fists of Freedom</em> is a significant movie that details the Black Boycott movement and focuses on the lives of various American Olympians from 1968. Those interested in the history of discrimination in sporting events should watch it. It is a powerful testament to the courage of Tommie Smith and John Carlos and their daring stand. Despite the fact that this is its most obvious flaw, the movie is also seriously limited for other reasons, including the absence of a contemporary interview with John Carlos (Domhoff, 2019, 10:09–10:55). The movie teaches important lessons about the attraction of athletics to racial minorities, especially Black people, highlighting how sport can serve as a forum for inclusion and recognition as well as a means of economic independence and self-expression.</p> <h2>Economic Limitations of Athletic Success</h2> <p>The first and most important insight from the movie is the widespread belief that athletics may be used as a vehicle for social and economic freedom. For example, athletes such as Tommie Smith and John Carlos progressed from financial hardship to improved circumstances. Unfortunately, this newfound financial independence did not last long because Olympian Tommie Smith eventually had to work washing cars (Domhoff, 2019, 54:20–54:50). From Smith's case, it can be inferred that using athletics as a means of achieving improved financial circumstances is highly uncertain. Athletes frequently find themselves trapped in their original conditions of poverty and may be unable to recover financially.</p> <h2>Sport as a Platform for Political and Cultural Resistance</h2> <p>In addition, the movie outlines the connection between the Olympics and social dynamics that have a major impact both inside and outside the world of athletics. The “Fists of Freedom” salute, popularized by Black Power, gave African Americans a powerful symbol through which to communicate their strength and demand recognition (Domhoff, 2019, 47:20–47:42).
